“It is actually something I have reflected on, if I were to start over today, and I truly mean this, I would have done more athletics. Athletics has always fascinated me. I encourage today’s youth to give the sport a try,” says Jon Askeland, County Mayor of Vestland County Municipality.

The U23 European Athletics Championships are fast approaching, and in this context, we had a conversation with Jon Askeland about the major event we are about to witness. The County Mayor is looking forward to the championship, which will take place at Fana Stadium in Bergen from July 17 to 20, 2025.

Bergen is already well-established as a host city, having hosted events such as The Tall Ships Races and the UCI Road World Championships. Askeland is delighted that Bergen has been awarded the U23 European Athletics Championships. He sees this as a recognition of both the athletic and athletics communities in Bergen, as well as the city’s capability as an event host. He believes the U23 Championships will have a ripple effect similar to past major events. He hopes the experience gained will enable the city and region to host even more events in the years to come.

Askeland also believes that if the event is a great success and the city basks in sunshine in July, it will positively influence how visitors perceive Bergen and the U23 Championships. It is likely that many will want to return. The fact that the championship is held in the middle of summer vacation has been a topic of discussion, but Askeland is convinced that this is only beneficial.

“People are on holiday then, and I believe many from Bergen and the surrounding areas will plan their vacation days around the event and take part in it.”

He believes this event will mean a lot to the people of Bergen, who are known for their openness and hospitality. They genuinely enjoy hosting visitors. Additionally, Bergen residents love when things are happening in the city. They eagerly participate when a festival-like atmosphere is created.

“Bergen residents are the best hosts for any event. We see this every single time.”

Askeland has great confidence in the athletes from Western Norway. He notes that we are currently experiencing an era with many outstanding athletes both in Vestland and Norway.

“We are in a golden age, and it is fantastic to follow them all.”

The County Mayor believes that a successful championship in July will help athletes continue to develop, allowing them to not only make a breakthrough in Bergen but also take the next step in their careers.

“I am really looking forward to it! I follow some of our talents in Vestland quite closely. I personally wish for them to succeed. I have always enjoyed athletics because it beautifully showcases how far a person can push their body. I think it is incredibly exciting!”

Askeland is ready for the U23 European Championships in Bergen, and we hope you are too. Everything is being set up for an athletics celebration at Fana Stadium, and now it is time for Bergen and Norway to show their support for the Heroes of Tomorrow.
