Welcome to Bergen – The city between the seven mountains!

Bergen is one of Norway’s most charming and historic cities. Founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre, the city has a rich history and culture that is reflected in its architecture, traditions and atmosphere. Here are some highlights and tips for your visit to Bergen.

History and culture

Bryggen: One of the most iconic places in Bergen is Bryggen, a World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO. This historic area, with its colorful wooden houses, was once the center of the Hanseatic League, German merchants who dominated trade in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. Today, Bryggen is home to shops, galleries and restaurants that provide an insight into Bergen’s rich history.

Fløibanen: Another popular attraction is the Fløibanen, a funicular that takes you up to Fløyen, one of the seven mountains that surround Bergen. From the top you get a fantastic view of the city and the fjords.

Ulriksbanen: For an even more spectacular view, take the Ulriksbanen train up to Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. From the top you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, the fjords and the surrounding mountains.

Fisketorget: Bergen has a long tradition as a trading city, and this can be experienced at Fisketorget. Here you can taste fresh seafood and buy local specialties.

Museums and art

KODE Art museums and composer home: KODE is a collection of four art museums in Bergen that offer an impressive collection of Norwegian and international art. The museums include works from Edvard Munch, J.C. Dahl and many others. You can also visit the homes of composers Edvard Grieg, Ole Bull and Harald Sæverud.

Bergenhus Fortress: One of the oldest and best preserved fortresses in Norway, Bergenhus Fortress gives visitors insight into Norway’s military history. Håkonshallen and Rosenkrantz Tower are the most famous buildings here.

Nature and outdoor activities

Bergen is known for its proximity to spectacular nature. The city is surrounded by fjords and mountains, providing excellent opportunities for outdoor activities.

Hiking and walks: For those who love to hike, Bergen offers a myriad of trails and routes. If you take the tram up to Fløyen, we recommend walking back down to the city center. Then you can enjoy the view and walk through narrow alleys and experience the charming wooden houses.

Fjords: A trip to Bergen is not complete without an excursion to the fjords. The city is a perfect starting point for boat trips to some of the most famous fjords in Norway, such as the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord.

Food and drink

Bergen has a thriving food scene that combines traditional Norwegian food with international flavors. The city has several restaurants that focus on local produce, especially seafood. Read more here:
